** Changes in word count aren’t usually a very useful metric for editing (though it depends, of course, on exactly what you’re doing—if you’re trying to cut words, they obviously can be), so it may be better to pick a more qualitative goal. For example, my goal is to get my SS*BB story through its continuity edit, and its continuity edit specifically: not the rewriting, not the proofreading, not the fine-tuning—just the continuity edit.
