Hey followers! I was having one of those artist crisis attacks (not like the fun Sailor Moon kind of attack) today, and decided to do an experiment to help myself determine something.

Do you ever look at other peoples art and just think ‘how do they DO THAT’ and when you try it yourself, it looks like a pile of wank? Some of the artist I follow produce such beautiful, smooth and textured lineart, whilst others have a sharp and precise style. I’ve never been able to decide which I like most, so I thought – why don’t I just see which one I’m better at?

I doodled a sketch of Sherlock, and then digitally lined it in both Photoshop and Sai Painter. This is the result. I can see the merits of both, but since I have a whole bunch of followers here (*cough*my sweet captive audience yessss*cough*) I thought I’d put it to you guys – which do you like better?

I’ll probably throw out more posts like this (le wall of text :B) because I want to know more about what kind of art people like to see on their dash.

I like how the PS one looks, but I always prefer how clean the pen and airbrush tools on SAI are.

I used to angst so much over how I could never get nice, smooth unbroken lines like some people as well, but after redrawing things a few times and not liking it, now I just accept my horribly messy nature and the fact that I can’t do everything (or anything :P) neatly.

I do like more sketchy styles from other artists, a lot of the time as well.

Which I’d prefer depends largely on what I’m planning to do with it after the lineart step.  The SAI one is smoother and cleaner for purposes of coloring, particularly if you like a cel-shading style.  The first one is great if you plan to let the lineart stand on its own, and if you’re planning to paint the final product, then even going this far with the lineart may be overkill.

I do love SAI’s lovely smooth inking tools, but SAI hates me. ;_; Every time I install it, some aspect of the program breaks—I lose the inking brushes, or the watercolor brushes, or the layers, or the undo history.  Whyyyyyyy.

Whatever, I guess.  It’s not like I’m any good at inking anyway.  I seem not to really be able to think in terms of pure lineart.  I always find myself shading things.
