Ok, I have to ask. The very, very ending of Coldfire. What did you think of it? I actually remember feeling…

I’m going to butt into this conversation as a fellow fan of the Coldfire Trilogy. It’s easily my favorite fantasy series, though oddly I can never remember it when people ask what fantasy series I enjoy. I have to agree though, I felt cheated, especially since she “broke” magic. That is one of my deep pet peeves with the fantasy genre. They love to break things. Ancient almighty relic? Yeah, lets trash it. Amazing civilization of wonder and sparkles? A little fire would spice that up. That’s bad enough, Friedman went and destroyed  an entire magic system.

Have you read Friedman’s new Magister series? I was a little let down myself, I haven’t finished the last one, but the entire series feels far more hollow. I can’t get behind the characters like in her other series. Maybe that’s me though.

Butt in!  Welcome!  Yay, fellow fans!

The magic-breaking…I didn’t mind it on principle, but it felt…well, kind of a missed opportunity.  Don’t want to get too far into that in case some followers want to read the books, but yeah, she had a few directions that could’ve gone in and I didn’t feel like she picked the most interesting one.  But it wasn’t terrible, either.

I haven’t read the Magister series.  I had a few friends who checked it out come back unimpressed. One of them said she was only reading it because one of the characters reminded her so much of Tarrant. XD
