This is a brilliantly tense and beautifully written fic that is both brutally hot and heartbreaking. Although Irene is ostensibly in charge all the way through this, the power dynamic between them is really brilliantly done. I love the way John is written here, all barely contained fury. The way that Irene enjoys baiting him, enjoys being a little bit frightened of him, it’s simply delicious.
I LOVE THIS STORY. Oh god, so much. The metaphors, the layers of control and dominance, and the ominous potency of the ending, the sense of a balance tipping. The knowledge that this is only where the ripples start. Everything about this story and every character in it is danger, barely restrained.
God, how much do I adore cyerus’s work. They’re one of those writers who I belatedly realized I had read extensively, loved every minute of, and never quite caught on that they were all the same person.
