#MEMO TO JIM KIRK #when bones and spock AGREE – let that sink in – that something is a bad idea #it’s probably a bad idea #what kills me most is that TOS!jim would have listened #but reboot!jim is this raw desperate kind of recklessness that hasn’t quite learned how to let himself lean on anyone
The differences between TOS!Kirk and Reboot!Kirk never cease to floor me.
Okay because catch it: back in the day, there was this TOS novel called Killing Time. It still exists, you can go out and buy it and BASICALLY it’s my all-time favorite Star Trek novel, because it’s about how these Romulans go back in time and change things so Kirk’s this fucked-up troubled youth who blew his way out of the Academy and…well, a lot of stuff that would be spoilers. BUT ESSENTIALLY he’s more or less Reboot!Kirk.
And it’s so amazing to see that essentially happen on the screen. The Star Trek Reboot isn’t like all the other remakes. Given the nature of the stories Star Trek tells, this is more “That time they fucked with time and DIDN’T manage to fix it.” I think of all the possibilities inherent in that, as Star Trek and as science fiction, and my mind boggles with joy.
