OH MY GOD WAIT

AMERICANS USE ‘DIGESTIVES’ AS A TERM FOR LAXATIVES DON’T THEY?

HAHAHAHA

america, you funny

Actually we use ‘laxative’ as a term for laxative.  I think ‘digestive’ just seemed like a good guess for what Brits might call laxatives instead.  It has such a polite ring to it, after all.

Honestly I’d assumed those cookies were called ‘digestives’ because maybe they had a bit of extra fiber added in so you could pretend they were a semi-healthy contribution to your diet rather than pure delicious junk food.  (You know, kind of like your average loaf of store-bought bread.)

But apparently it’s one of those things that happen in a country that has History.  Back in the 1800s, cookies like those were marketed as having antacid properties because of the baking soda used in baking them.  Well…turns out not so much, I guess—at least no more than any other grain product—but the name stuck anyway.

We Could Know Better: why do the british apparently snack on laxatives?
