It’s an experiment! We were inspired by the fantastic Let’s Draw Sherlock project to create a similar project for writers of fanfic based on BBC Sherlock.
The basic idea is exactly the one expressed by Ivyblossom above (in an interview on the Three Patch Podcast). What would happen if we chose one “classic” fandom trope and a large number of fanfic writers set out to write a fic based on it? Would we get a hundred copies of the same fic, or would we get a set of fantastic fics celebrating our most beloved tropes, each unique and putting its own twist on this classic?
Are you ready, Sherlock writers? If so, your first challenge is below! If we have a good response to this first challenge, we’ll do more.
Challenge 1: After a nearly disastrous case, Sherlock and John share a tense taxi ride back to Baker Street. With emotions running high, they finally arrive back at 221B, and then…
We would love to have as many participants as possible, and so there are very few limits on what you can contribute. Here are a few Guidelines:
1. Fics can be of any length, style, genre, or rating. We hope to see everything from drabbles and poems to chaptered stories. As long as the medium is text, it’s all fine.
2. We’ve obviously chosen a Johnlock sort of prompt, but gen fics based on the prompt are also perfectly lovely! Don’t feel like your fic has to be shippy or smutty, if that’s not where your story wants to go or what you feel comfortable with writing.
3. On the other hand, if porn is what you want to write, feel free to make your fic as smutty as you like.
4. AU fics are also totally fine, though in keeping with our “let’s write the same fic” theme, we still want all submissions to focus on the BBC characterizations rather than on one of the many other incarnations of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
5. In order to be considered part of the collection of this challenge, your fic should be posted by June 30. If you write a chaptered fic, it doesn’t have to be complete by June 30; you just need to post at least one chapter by June 30.
6. Post your fic wherever you like, and then make a post to your own Tumblr blog with the following information:
Title:
Author:
Summary: (Something in addition to the prompt!)
Rating: (G, T, M, E)
Length: (number of words)
Warnings: (for any potentially trigger content; if none, just put “none”)
Author notes: (optional)
Links: (if you post your fic in multiple places, feel free to add multiple links)Then tag your post with “letswritesherlock”, “challenge 1”, and your author name, and post it to your own blog. We will track the letswritesherlock tag and will queue your posts to reblog here.
7. If your fic is a drabble or a short poem, feel free to include it under a Read More cut in your post. For anything longer than 250 words, please post it elsewhere and include a link.
8. If you post your fic to AO3, we’ll add it to a collection especially for this challenge.
9. Be creative! Have fun! And feel free to submit as many fics as you like. The more, the merrier! Also, please also read and comment on the fics of other participants. We all love getting kudos and comments, so please be generous with your fandom love. 🙂
