its literally originally a spock quote oh my god

…what.

From The Sign of Four, Chapter VI, Sherlock Holmes Gives a Demonstration:

“You will not apply my precept,” he said, shaking
his head. “How often have I said to you that
when you have eliminated the impossible whatever
remains, however improbable, must be the truth? We
know that he did not come through the door, the
window, or the chimney. We also know that he could
not have been concealed in the room, as there is no
concealment possible. Whence, then, did he come?”

Maybe check your sources first? I’d advise it, really.

Yes, but in the Sherlock universe time line, the 2009 Star Trek was in cinemas before the character Sherlock said this. Which is why John says, “Alright, Spock.”

It helps to remember these things, but I did it for you. You’re welcome.

Yeah, but considering Sherlock exists in a universe independent of the JJ Abrams reboot, which isn’t the only Star Trek existent in the world, John could have been making this reference about The Original Series (where Spock claims one of “his ancestors” said it, implication being Holmes was an ancestor) or the reboot, and on top of that, both of them were referencing the original Sign of Four, published in 1890.

See, it’s a joke, friend. A joke. One that’s been running for about 50 years. But then again, you’d have to follow the references all the way back, which you didn’t. But that’s okay. I did it for you. You’re so delightfully welcome.

If you had intended it as a joke, it would have helped if you did not phrase your post as you did. I did not think it funny.

Also, it was incomplete in its facts.

Yes, the original phrase was published in The Sign of Four. And it was the phrase from the Conan Doyle canon Spock was quoting.

However, in the timeline of the Sherlock series, SoF did not happen. So the only frame of reference the characters have is Spock saying it. Since the image above is reboot Spock, the obvious connection was John quoting him, rather than TOS Spock.

They seem to have missed that first ‘It’s literally originally a Spock quote’ comment you were replying to.  Poor Maz.

Reading comprehension . Learn it, live it, love it.
