A long cathartic text post on hurt feelings and writing, Please scroll past.
Unless you too have a horribly difficult time learning how to write, in which case you and I should go get a drink some time.
First, I am disgusted that a writer would respond like that. THEY HAVE BEEN THERE. Every single one of us has. They were being a hypocrite, not to mention profoundly rude and shallow. It’s a privilege to be able to mentor someone in art or writing, and I am just so offended on your behalf that someone would treat your accomplishment that way.
With all the patience and care they’ve shown you in supporting you and answering your questions, I think that they are fundamentally a good, helpful person. I hope that they have second thoughts on this issue and realize that they were ungracious.
Second, and more important, Doodles, I am SO IMPRESSED with you right now. What a magnificent way to learn to write! You’ve really pulled out and recognized all the details, techniques, and point-by-point skills that go into ‘writing a story.’ It’s not just you! There are people who’ve been writing for years who still can’t manage to jump time, and scene transitions are definitely one of those fundamentals that you can spend your whole life mastering. (Ahahaha, if I could count the number of times I or a friend have been writing, and then just locked up, going, “How do I start the next scene?!”) Seriously, you are KICKASS. I doff my cap to your persistence and methodical approach. Considering how much I admire those short snatches you sometimes caption your art with, I can tell you that you have the natural talent. It’s just the toolbox that you’re having to put together. Not all of us are lucky enough to have put in the work on that as kids, and it’s kind of breathtaking to see your approach to doing so now.
