bluesrat:

I’ve been thinking about blogging my own trek to fitness.  I think I have a unique take on it.  I can’t speak much about getting into shape, but I have worlds of experience in starting to get into shape, which is a whole different category of its own.

Every fitness program you come across—whether it’s a tv show or a book or a video series—they almost universally start with the assumption that you’re already in shape.  And if you’re not already in shape—like most of us aren’t when we’re trying to start a workout—then you feel like you can’t do anything right and it’ll never happen and what’s the point of it all, really?

Nobody ever talks about starting to get fit from square one, when you’re at the ‘going upstairs in my house leaves me winded’ stage.  It’s a whole different thing; exercises don’t work the same in certain ways, and you have to treat your body differently.  You have to be patient, and you have to learn things like how to get in tune with what your body’s telling you and how to know when to stop and how to find the right exercises for you so that it’s not all misery and boredom (and also how to find the right exercises for you when you have bad joints, or a weak heart, or migraine triggers…).

I think people should talk about that more.  I wonder if anybody would be interested.

So that people know, this is a thing I’ll be doing over at my other blog.  If anybody is interested in following along, feel free to follow me at bluesrat!
