In my opinion sherlock didn’t tell john because he needed the world to see john believing in his death! If John Watson convinced that sherlock died then anybody else will.

But the world wasn’t watching John. We have no evidence that ANYBODY was watching John. If he hadn’t been posting in his blog (and according to his blog, for quite some time he did stop), then nobody would’ve had a thing to say about it or a conclusion to draw, except maybe that he was grieving or felt too stupid about being ‘taken in’ to talk about it anymore.

The world was already sufficiently convinced. There were newspaper articles and online hysteria. Sherlock did not NEED John to cry public tears in order for people to be convinced.
