So if we truly want to reduce the number of abortions in America, we need to lower the rates of unintended pregnancies—with access to contraception and comprehensive sex education—and/or make it more possible for women to have and raise children if they choose, by increasing wage and income supports, especially for low-income women. That is a simple formula. Why are conservatives doing everything they can to oppose these policies—and to drive up the abortion rate in America?

Still waiting for GOP to answer that question. I believe the answer is: Either they’re utterly clueless, or they just hate women. Not sure which is worse. In other news, Sally Kohn is right about everything.

Speaking as a former Republican, I can tell you this does have an answer.  It’s because it’s way more convenient and less expensive for the people running the GOP to keep bitching about it than it is for them to actually do the work of trying to fix the system.

The people who run the GOP are as far away from the people who vote for them as two different species, frankly.  The voters are mostly decent, normal people from rural areas who tend to face a lot of poverty and economic instability, aren’t always very well-educated, and see the world changing at a breakneck pace and are afraid because they feel unequipped to deal with it.

The bigwigs gleefully lie, foment and spew hate and fear-mongering to keep the Republican voters feeling frightened, cornered, and allienated from liberals and moderates.

If there’s one great service the media could do for this country, it would be showing the blue-collar Republicans just how much contempt the people who run their own party have for them and that they really do have other options.

Changing the channel to CNN doesn’t particularly help, because when you’ve been led to believe for years that the people over there are the ‘enemy,’ you’re not exactly inclined to listen to them, are you?  Especially when they start talking about how dumb or horrible conservatives are.  That just seems to prove the point.

Honestly I pray on a weekly basis that the majority of the party will one day wake up and declare themselves Libertarian.

(Though while I’m at it, I have to say I notice an awful lot of Democratic politicans don’t seem to be racing to get off their duff and do anything about this either.  The major movers in both parties are way too comfortable with the status quo.)
