I found a book of concept work and draft scrips for City on the Edge of Forever.
Why wasn’t this scene in the final version!?
It’s a pity.
James Blish seems to have had access to this material: these lines (and others not aired) turn up in his prose adaptation of “City” in Star Trek 2.
This scene that never made it into “City on the Edge of Forever” is possibly my favorite thing ever in Star Trek. It’s so… Well. Just look at it.
I imagine it was probably cut out because they needed to streamline things for time, and it wasn’t strictly necessary. But it single-handedly creates Vulcan and its people at an emotional level that Trek has never had the opportunity to reach again, and simultaneously nails down the essence of the relationship between Kirk and Spock.
