To be clear:

It’s okay to like Mary.

It’s okay to hate Mary.

Mary being a good or bad person is totally separate from a character being a well or poorly-drawn character.

Mary doing bad things or being a bad person is totally separate from Mary being positioned as an antagonist/villain in the narrative.

Liking or hating Mary is totally separate from approving or disapproving of her actions.

Hating Mary does not equal being a misogynist.

You can think Mary is a well-made character and still not like her.

You can think Mary is poorly-made but still like her.

You can like Mary but still think that she’s being handled poorly in the narrative.

You can like Mary but think the narrative would be better off without her in it at all.

You can hate Mary but still think she brings something valuable to the narrative.

You can hate Mary without even knowing why.

You can like Mary without even knowing why.

You can have totally shallow reasons for liking or hating Mary.

You don’t owe anybody a justification of your opinion about Mary.

It’s okay to like Mary.

It’s okay to hate Mary.
