Might I recommend Elizabeth Bear’s Ink and Steel and Hell and Earth? Not quite a superhero AU, but they are in fact fighting evil, protecting England and the queen, making dirty puns, dealing with Faerie and magic, and generally being amazing.
Possibly my single favorite thing about that series is that it starts with a meeting of mysterious men in a dark room and the words, “I know a guy.” (Except in Elizabethan.)
