john LITERALLY didn’t forgive mary do people not know the definition of forgiveness

it definitely does not involve still being very pissed off like that is the exact opposite of what forgiveness means

like even if you believe he was acting (which i do) he didn’t even ACT forgiveness he literally expressed the opposite

To tell the truth, it seems as though most people find their definition of ‘forgiveness’ shifts over the course of their lives.

When you’re a kid this is what people tell you it means: to be over it, to not be upset.

But as you get older, you begin to realize that whether you’re upset or not doesn’t come into it.  Forgiveness isn’t about your emotional response.  It’s a choice, to decide whether or not you will hold this against the other person, whether you decide to let it damage your relationship with them or not.

Sometimes it does anyway.  That youthful definition is not entirely wrong.  Sometimes you can try but fail to forgive someone.  Sometimes you can discover you forgave them along the way without really planning to.

But then that’s the way with any choice: sometimes you can make one without making it deliberately.

And then, sometimes you can forgive someone, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you will trust them the same way afterwards.  You don’t have to be bitter or angry to learn from experience.
