Doyle wrote Mary Morstan into The Sign of Four, when he wasn’t expecting to write more Sherlock Holmes stories. He dealt with her in later stories, first by basically ignoring her existence, then by killing her off-screen in a way that is never described. He never even shows Watson grieving her. He barely mentions her name after TSOF; Watson just refers to her as “my wife.” That is a boring sexist female character. The villain Mary Morstan that Moftisson have given us is way better. Embrace villain Mary. Embrace her.

Whether she’s an antagonist or a protagonist, they added her as a character so I damn well want them to treat her with respect.  If she goes, I want her to have a solid, meaningful death or exit.  If she stays, then she should be given…well, I’d say the same kind of respect that Mrs. Hudson and Molly and Sally get, but that’s sort of the problem, isn’t it?  They’re not always great with the women they’ve already got on the show.

Fundamentally, the show is just not about Mary.  It’s about Sherlock and John.  Once the story arc that puts Mary in the center of the narrative is done, one way or another, alive or dead, she’s going to get pushed into the background.  And regardless of whether you like her or hate her, I just have such a problem with this approach (in entertainment media in general) of introducing new female characters only to sideline them once their initial usefulness is over.
