I participate in Sherlock fandom because I really love this story and these characters, and I’m really enjoying playing in this universe, thinking about what’s going on under the surface, constructing arguments out of evidence, contradicting myself over and over as I read, and write, and think about things differently, and discussing the whole enterprise with other passionate fans. I love all that stuff.
There are as many perspectives on what’s going on, what’s “in character” and “out of character”, and predictions about directions the narrative arc could take as there are fans in fandom.
Telling women they should have less confidence in what they believe in and are passionate about in order to make their presence smaller and more palatable to their critics is one of the uglier things I’ve seen in fandom in a while. Screw that. Fuck that tone argument. Are people offended by your confidence? Good. Move on to being fucking strident about the things you love and believe. Hoist your flags. There is no reason whatsoever to undercut yourself to please your critics. Fuck’em.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.
