From a students’ notes on the Western: “The five most important characteristics and conventions of this genre were the open range setting, the extreme sense of cowboy, the old saloon riding off into the sunset, and shootout.” I think they wrote these kinda late. Then again, there is nothing more extremely cowboy than an old saloon riding off into the sunset.

Well, if you take the British sense of ‘saloon,’ then this gives you the ending to Blazing Saddles.

So they’re kind of right.
