I’d like to think that b/c he’s lost everything, Rygel would have learned humanity and compassion, but lbr, he’d just be even worse, b/c now he’d know what’d happen if he lost his position AGAIN. That being said, he’s my problematic fave. 🙂
Hee! He does get better! We see him growing up throughout the series, developing spurts of empathy, compassion and even (very rarely, in small ways) moments of self-sacrifice. But he’s still a greedy, selfish adorably ugly little troll.
Then again, apparently Hynerians are just like that. The history of their rulers sounds so bad that Rygel’s probably fairly benign compared to some of them.
My fave thing about Rygel, though, is (are?) his hidden depths. He’s such a goofy little lump that it’s easy to forget he used to rule entire star systems and he can play the political game with the best in the galaxy.
But anyway, I just got through Family Ties/Mind the Baby on Wednesday, which have some of my favorite Rygel moments. (When John kisses him on his little head! <3)
