You know, I’d totally forgotten about “The Choice” and how miraculous it is.
Crichton may be the character the show is named after, but Aeryn is the haunted soldier with a dark past, fighting to redeem herself. And in this episode she hits her lowest point. We see her give in to her anger over all the shit and unfairness and loss she’s had to face. We see her run away from her new life and all the hard, painful choices it forces her to make every day.
It’s amazing, because we never get to see a woman allowed to be this. And that’s not even the best part. Or even that she does it without wallowing in manpain—because she doesn’t think she’s some special snowflake who’s entitled to anything, and she doesn’t see the point of wasting her time angsting about her guilt when she could be going out, helping people and earning her redemption.
No, the best part is how the men all keep trying to stalk I mean rescue her and play savior. And when they try, she literally kicks them in the ass, calls them out to their face on exactly what they’re doing, and sends them the hell away, because she doesn’t need or want saving. She’s here on this creepy-ass planet full of ghosts because she’s making a goddamn choice for herself, and she gets to be drunk and haunted and indulge herself in opium dreams of everything she can never get back if she damn well wants to. She’s fucking Aeryn Sun. She’ll rescue herself when she’s good and ready.
And she does.
