FARSCAPE IS THE ACTUAL FUCKING BEST. THAT MOTHERFUCKING SPACE TRASH GOT ME THROUGH THE GODDAMN BRIMSTONE AND DAMNATION THAT IS HIGH SCHOOL.
Like the first couple of episodes of the first season are uneven as all hell, cause it’s reeeeeally fucking obvious they were still feeling out the overall tone of the show—but DNA Mad Scientist is a turning point, where they sort of realized that it was, essentially, Con Air with puppets.
It is the most trope laden and unabashedly fanservice-y science fiction show since fucking Red Dwarf, which is very much is spiritual predecessor. But what makes it actually fucking work—the glue that holds the whole damn thing together are fucking characters and their relationships, who you can’t help but love and love to hate.
It also deconstructs the every living shit out of those tropes, and was irreverent as hell, which goes a long way in keeping things fresh.
I’m SO not exaggerating when I say it’s one of the biggest influences as a writer. It’s certainly not perfect, but it’s far and away one of the best shows to come out of the Scifi Channel (back when it still was actually CALLED the Scifi Channel).
