Awwww, anon, that is both adorable and badass!

Wolves are so cool.  We’re still learning so much about their psychology.  They’re nothing like we believed they were just 20 years ago.

It turns out that packs are family units, you know?  The ‘alphas’ are the parents–but they’re very bossy over their adult offspring.  A young wolf probably isn’t going to be able to find a mate and start their own pack unless they leave their parents’ pack.  But it’s a dangerous world out there for a lone wolf.  Not all wolves leave their packs, but some do, and of course Sherlock would have.  He’d never settle for anyone else dictating his behavior!

Meanwhile, poor John.  Why is John alone?  Wolves look after their sick and injured, if they can.  Maybe…bear with me here.  Maybe John had a mate.  Maybe John led a pack.  Maybe John lost his mate, and in his devastation he left his pack to a younger pair and went off into the world on his own.

He loves his old pack, but they won’t stand for him trying to start up something new in their territory, and so he has to go.  It’s dangerous to be a lone wolf.  I already said that.  But John takes a risk in traveling through other packs’ territory.  They can chase him.  They might try to kill him.  But this is John we’re talking about, after all.  Brave, intrepid, risk-taking John.  So he sets off, looking for a new life.  It’s quite a journey.  Perhaps he’s wounded.  Maybe he’s wounded when Sherlock finds him.

Sherlock is strong and brilliant, even for a wolf.  He’s snuck through the territory of other wolf packs, surveyed them without them ever spotting him, looking for a mate, a pack, a sign of a place to start his new life.  And he can’t lie, he’s disappointed by what he’s finding.  Wolves are supposed to be the highest form of life, but they’re all so…average.

Until he smells John.

Of course he follows the trail.  Another lone wolf?  He has to see!  And oh, OH, isn’t this one glorious.  Even wounded, he’s cunning and strong.  And when he meets Sherlock, he sees a kindred spirit.  It’s soulmates at first sight, really.  John’s been so alone for so long, and now this great dark wolf with his snow-blue eyes is an absolute balm.

The pair they make…no one will ever forget them. ^_^
