For those days when a little nudge will do, this is why I keep myself surrounded by paraphernalia of stuff that was truly formative and inspiring to me when I was new to the world… my Star Wars, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Thundercats, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Transformers: The Movie, and The Last Starfighter posters, for example… my oldest and dearest paperbacks. My Midkemia books. The stuffed beagle who’s been with me for 37 years now. My soundtracks for works in progress and works not yet begun… all of this stuff reminds me of where I came from and where I hope to go with the chance I’ve been given to do this work.

However, there are some days when nothing is enough, when the depression wins. And the thing to realize is that’s okay… every illness is going to win the day sometimes. Every illness is going to keep you from doing something now and then. Everyone loses a day occasionally, and it’s just the way it is. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Give yourself permission not to feel like a unique failure over it. Get back up and come at the work again when your brain chemicals are more cooperative.

I’d say I lose, on average, a day of every week to depression and anxiety issues. I hate that. But if you look at it another way, I beat the fucker six times out of seven.
