The intro for PBS’ MYSTERY! inspired by the art of Edward Gorey

Actually Gorey WORKED on these – not just inspired them. He story boarded the credits and then animators took those ideas and cut it down to a workable length.

They left out the best part – the woman moaning and crying because she was tied up on the roof BUT ONLY HER FEET WERE TIED SHE COULD HAVE UNTIED THEM HERSELF AT ANY TIME.

When my sister and I were too young to actually watch what was being shown on Mystery!, my parents would still let us stay up and watch the credits, because we all loved them.

This probably says something about my family, although hell if I know what it is.

Ah, this brings back memories. PBS Mystery! was my first exposure to Grenada Holmes, Roy Marsden as Adam Dalgleish, and some interesting wild cards: Praying Mantis, a creepy French (English-dubbed) series that crossed a modern-day Les Liaisons Dangereuses with Double Indemnity; Die Kinder, a (British, despite the title) series starring a young Miranda Richardson, whose children are kidnapped by her ex-husband who’s a member of a barely disguised Red Army Faction cell; and Mother Love, a Diana Rigg tour de force that’s one of the fucking scariest things I’ve ever seen in any medium. (Seriously, if you’ve ever thought to yourself, “I want to see Diana Rigg play Hyacinth Bucket, if Hyacinth Bucket were an utterly deranged serial killer,” this is the show for you.)  All three of those wild cards were never commercially released but I found them by other means and Die Kinder, at least, holds up spectacularly well. Not sure about Mother Love, as it was creeping me out so much I had to turn it off, and that’s even before I got to the flashback where she’s eight years old and murders her best friend. Also, the unshown credits woman who was helpless because her feet–but not her hands!–were tied was an ongoing puzzle of my childhood.

a) yes, best credits are best.

b) Mother Love was fab –  Diana Rigg and David McCallum and yes, creepy as hell.

I can’t believe I never noticed that the tied-up woman wasn’t very tied-up.

God, this is giving me so many nostalgic feels right now.
