Let’s stop for a few minutes and talk about Maine’s fighting style and how hopelessly ineffective it was against Tex.

In the first panel, it’s just one, two. Broad swings. Tex blocks them. He doesn’t change his stance. In the second panel, she’s got him figured out—duck the swing, then use the leverage he gave her to toss him up him and kick him away. Panel three is a really good example of how easy it is to put him off balance when he’s swinging. And the fourth panel is just… fucking hilarious because Tex ducks, Maine overshoots, and Wyoming eats Maine’s fist.

Maine’s a behemoth. He’s powerful because he’s big and muscly and those broad swings allow him to put his weight behind his punches. But he’s limited to using himself like a cudgel. Against Tex—with all her strength, agility, and quick-thinking—he was just way out of his league.

Can you imagine if they’d worked together like York tried to get them to do, though?  Maine’s the one person with enough strength to at least reliably power through Tex’s blocks.  Have him open her up and then York and Wyoming coordinate on her and they might actually have managed to take her down.

But that’s kind of the problem with Freelancer.  They never were able to get over themselves and come together that well as a team.
