prettyarbitrary:

It occurs to me that since it is approaching Halloween, perhaps I should share some of my ghost stories with Tumblr to honor the season.

I’ve got a bunch from an apartment building I used to live in, and my old roommates have a few others.

The creepiest was the day one of my roommates was home alone and he heard screaming coming from the floor below ours.  He said he grabbed a hammer and went down, because it sounded like a terrified woman and he’s the kind of person who does that sort of thing.

But when he got there, the screaming was in the hallway, right in front of him, and there was no one there.  He said that after a few seconds, it started moving down the hallway away from him and then stopped when it reached the far end.

He knew it wasn’t just in his mind because a minute or so later a neighbor came downstairs.  He’d heard it too, and wanted to know if everyone was alright.

That building, though.

The laundry room was in the basement, and it was shaped like a double-ended Y.  So when you came downstairs, you had to go around a corner and down a hall to get to the laundry room.

Sometimes, when you rounded the corner, you’d catch a glimpse of an old man in dapper evening wear walking away from you at the other end of the hall.

Usually he was there for just an instant when you rounded the corner. Like you were seeing an afterimage.  But a friend of mine who was visiting said that when she went down, he tipped his hat to her.

I hadn’t told her about him.

And then the laundry room was actually two large storage rooms.  The washing machines were in the second, darker room, and the dryers were in the first room right off the hall.

Sometimes when it was dark, you could see red eyes in the large room, pacing. Somebody else who lived there told me that they’d seen a huge black dog, but I only ever saw flashes of red.

It never felt extremely threatening to me.  But when I could see them, I preferred not to go in there.

The old man, on the other hand…  I dunno, he seemed very genteel, but also like he could be very dangerous.

There was also a woman in our apartment.

She was very gentle.  If you were home alone, and a woman, you could sometimes catch a glimpse of her green skirt in the hallway, passing into a room, and hear glass chiming in the dining room as she tidied.

No men who visited or stayed there ever saw her, though sometimes they heard the glass. But my female roommate and I, and female guests, saw her now and then.

Or at least the glimpse of her skirt.

That was a strange building.

I have other stories from other places.  Maybe I’ll share them another night.
