Writing Resource: Fragrantica.com perfume & cologne database:

Here’s a resource I use when I’m writing scent, especially for characters.  It’s actually a database of perfumes and colognes, but it does a great job of breaking them down by what scents comprise them, and you can also learn about what each scent means (what’s ‘neroli,’ for example? Read and find out!)

Don’t skimp when it comes to reading the reviews of various perfumes and colognes, since the reviewers often go into some detail on what it smelled like to them as an actual experience–which lands in that special sweet spot you get when you find wonks who know the lingo deliberately speaking in a way that laypeople will understand.  It can be pretty educational for improving your ability to write scent in general.

If you happen to have a department store with a perfume counter not too far from you, it becomes even more useful (and fun) since then you can go and play around a bit and experience it for yourself.
