yo i hated bedelia at first and i still kind of hate her but she DOES HER THANG MAN so i respect bedelia but she’s really hard to figure out

That helps! I know some friends of mine really liked her a lot, so I’m waiting to see if she grows on me. Like, I think I get why Gillian Anderson is doing the quiet almost monotone voice thing, but it’s driving me up the wall.

Bedelia’s not a likable person, in a lot of ways, but she’s determined to swim through this whole mess and survive it and continue being her own person no matter what it takes, which is admirable in its own way.

The monotone thing serves a couple of purposes.  In character, it’s a way for her to avoid giving the (increasingly alarming) people around her any more psychological ammo than she absolutely has to.

Out of character, Anderson said it started because early on, the writers didn’t really know where they were going with Bedelia, so she tried to play her in a way that wouldn’t create potential characterization conflicts later on.  Hence, her persistent inscrutability.

She’s also giving more than just a slight nod to the Hitchcock blonde, so that’s always fun.  This is a very Hitchcock kind of show.
