The funny thing about the historical usage of the term “adventurer” is how it gravitates to extremes. You look at any given “adventurer”, and I guarantee you, either they’re a murderous grave robber with delusions of grandeur, or else they just wanted to look at birds and it sort of got out of hand. No middle ground whatsoever.
Adventuress is much less binary, as it ranges from “Code for probably being lesbian or bisexual”, “Either of the above, but also set a convent on fire in order to seduce a nun”, or “We think maybe straight, but ran away from an abusive husband and accidentally founded a small kingdom in the middle east”
