So the glorious dirty secret about Overwatch is that you don’t actually need the game! 😀 Blizzard kinda stumbled into this weird flipped development setup where they built a whole world and story, and the game they set in it was basically a non-canon PvP brawler. All the actual story is going down in their animated shorts and comics and things! (All of which are free so far!) There are some other things, too. A few in-world ‘journalism’ pieces, background in their character bios, that kind of thing.
I mean, if you play the game then there are a lot of voice lines and hidden easter eggs that can give you more clues about the plotline they’re slowly unfolding. But the plot doesn’t happen in the game.
A note for sanity’s sake: It’s worth noting that they’re still evolving things as they go. So the older materials don’t always jibe 100% with details of the newer stuff. Also there’s a fair amount of ‘movie logic’ surrounding stuff like character ages relative to how old they’d realistically be given their accomplishments, how the military works, things like that.
