He is a kakapo! One of the flightless parrots of New Zealand. They are the world’s heaviest parrot, possibly the world’s longest-lived bird (I believe there’s one female they’re pretty sure hit 120), and critically endangered, due to invasive animals like rats and snakes which prey on their ground-based nests.
New Zealand is mounting an intensive conservation campaign to re-establish kakapo, clearing some of the smaller islands of the invasive species and moving the kakapo there so they can reproduce peacefully. It’s going well but slowly. As of this year, after a booming breeding season in 2016, their numbers are up to about 155.
