Grief, mostly. It’d hurt like hell because
basically part of their spinal cord just got removed. There’d be lots of bleeding. They’d both be sad because they’ve gotten fairly attached to their tails. It’d impact that superhuman sense of balance somewhat, although they could probably compensate for it with a bit of practice. Humans don’t really need tails, after all.
