The concept of software and other digital content being something the consumer rents rather than owns is an aggressive constant in nearly every field, that fucks over pretty much everyone who has to work with something computerized at any time in their life.
Their argument: you can’t just take your car or tractor to any mechanic you want. It can only go to mechanics the company authorizes, because THEY own your car or tractor, and you only license it. Also, you sure as hell don’t have the right to repair anything yourself, because it’s not yours. You have to give them money or you’re violating their copyright and therefore can be prosecuted.
