And on the topic of sex positivity being “sin enabling” I feel like we should discuss what sex negativity enables.

  • folks that don’t know how their bodies function (this leads to unwanted pregnancies for starters but also disease)
  • people who have weird understandings about how sex works and therefore feel “lost” or “used” or whatever after a sexual experience (particularly if they’re female)
  • a hypocritical culture in which most people are having sex but nobody talks about it and so people feel ashamed for doing something that almost everyone else has done
  • it fosters an inability for people to have fun & gratifying sex because of the shame and taboo surrounding the act
  • it makes it so that all sex = bad instead of what would make more sense which would be non-consensual/ not safe sex = bad
  • which of course then leads us to actively devalue people who have sex that we don’t find acceptable (women without wedding rings, non-hetero sex, and etc)

and this is just a starting list of what sex negativity enables. there’s much more.

so how are folks that claim sex positivity is bad going to account for this?

By ignoring the existence of the inconvenient facts outlined above, just as they have for the last millennium of western civilization.  (Don’t know enough history to speak to other societies.)

Lalalalalala.  What sorry I can’t hear you over the sound of my own oblivious humming.

Seriously, though, writing Odalisque has turned out to be shockingly educational.  I’ve been doing all this research on the underpinnings of female sex, orgasm, fertility cycle, pregnancy, abortions, etc., and…dude.  Revelatory.  They basically spent my high school sex ed course hunting for filler with pathetically blatant desperation when they could’ve been actually teaching us this stuff.

But you know, I grew up fairly well aware of how the male orgasm works.  Funny how that goes.
