Fuck yeah, beach bodies! by ~Anlina

Good friend of mine drew this for a fat-positive, body-positive beach event her friend was holding. Thought it was worth sharing.

NO. i do NOT want to see this. and i’m not going to apologize for it. because if i can work hard to make myself look as good as i do, then so can everyone else. and if they want to be lazy- i’m not the one who should be punished. i hate seeing women at the beach in next to nothing when it’s OBVIOUS they should be wearing a cover up. like seriously.. you don’t SEE yourself when you look in the mirror? wtf is your problem?

No, just no. You’re the one with the problem. If you can’t take pride in yourself without some arbitrary bullshit number attached to your dress size, that’s your issue, not mine, and not the artist’s, and not the thousands of people who supported and reblogged this image.

If you don’t like how people look in their swimsuits, you don’t have to look. The world is not here simply for your shallow, small-minded entertainment.

Anyone else want to let this person know how ill-informed they are?

Yeah, I’d like to take exception to the ‘lazy’ clause.  I spent about three years gaining weight until I was obese, because of stress.  I exercised every day and ate healthy (and not that anyone’s said so, but if anyone is thinking it’s ‘not trying hard enough’ unless you try to alter your body with diets, drugs, or surgery—please go get a surgical attitude adjustment), but there was not a thing I could do to lose it until I was able to change my circumstances.

Some people have health problems.  Some people can’t safely exercise.  Some people are just built bigger than others.  If you’re fortunate enough to be able to work the weight down to what society says is an attractive shape, then good for you.  But not everyone’s blessed with those genes, and I’d rather see them be happy, proud, and at peace with themselves than miserable and self-hating.  The people in this artwork arebeautiful.  They’re self-confident, cultivate their appearances, and their sheer personality shines through.  They don’t need to be a size 6 in order to be attractive.  There are more important things in life.  And especially more important than “Oh no, I might upset total strangers at the beach because I don’t look like a pinup model!”

And frankly, if you’re a woman, then you probably have some experience with how hard—often impossible—it is to meet those social standards of ‘looking good,’ and the kind of damage it can do to someone who doesn’t meet them.  And you should know enough to have the empathy and understanding not to push that damage along.  Maybe I have unrealistic ideas about human decency, but I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
