The Hound is the second Lovecraft story I’ve read where the villain-protagonist is linked with the Decadent poets, and I’m beginning to wonder if this was a Thing of Lovecraft’s. By “a Thing”, I mean either a fannish in-joke (“Fandom X totally ruined my life!”) or sincere disapproval (“I honestly believe that Oscar Wilde is a gateway drug that leads to graverobbing.”) It’s kind of hard to tell with Lovecraft sometimes.
Lovecraft was such a wiener. You never know what you’re gonna get with him.
(OK, it’s probably racism. Or sexism.)
I take quite a bit of satisfaction in how homoerotic the movies based on his works tend to be, and how much shippy fanfic has been generated due to his stuff, and how I cuddle Cthulhu plushies at night sometimes.
It’s kind of fun knowing how outraged he be by all of this nowadays.
Oh, I take delight in having written homoerotic fanfic about Herbert West. Dear God that original story takes some awful turns (I don’t mean “gory”, I like gory — I mean “holy shit that’s racist”).
Lovecraft would probably be puzzled by his fandom. I love it.
Yeaaaaaaaahhhhhh … like, there’s something really awful about finding out the guy who pretty much created the modern idea of cosmic horrors from beyond space and time who can eat your souls was equally horrified by the idea of … interracial couples.
Kinda like when you’re at a family gathering and an older relative spouts off an offensive comment and you just sit there shocked not knowing what to do.
What I wanna know is how on earth Sonia Greene agreed to marry him.
Don’t forget the time he wrote about hillbillies who degenerated into murderous inbred subterranean mole-men. He was also classist!
Homoerotic Herbert West fanfic is everything that’s good about life.
