BBC Sherlock rec: All Our Gifts At Once, or, the Young Sea-man, by tiltedsyllogism:
Would you like to read the most exquisite Sherlock/Little Mermaid fairytale fusion I have ever been privileged to take into my eyeballs?
You would, I assure you.
It is a bittersweet, delicately shining marvel of historical fiction fused with fairy tale, modeled on the Hans Christian Andersen version of The Little Mermaid. Featuring no character death, but angst and pining enough to rip your soul out (gently, stitch by stitch), turn it inside out and put it back in. I’m feeling rather dissolved into foam myself right now.
This story haunts me. I read all but the last two chapters months and months ago, and have never been able to stop thinking about it. And now blessed, sweet, breathtakingly talented tiltedsyllogism (yes you are, Syl, hush) has finished it and brought it to the perfect close it deserves.
While you’re at it, don’t miss the chance to marvel over Syl’s beautifully researched historical and literary footnotes!
I’m not kidding, this story is amazing.
