I just found a USB key I don’t recognise in my purse. Every time I plug it in, it insists on re-installing itself. It’s labelled as EFI. I have no idea what EFI might stand for. It’s completely empty. It’s also only 196 megs, so I can put basically nothing useful on it.
Where did it come from?
What was originally on it?
Cthulhu
Okay, fine.
It’s a boot disc. If you plug it in while your computer is booting and hit all the right buttons on your keyboard you might be able to see it. But honestly I wouldn’t bother.
If you want to keep it, do a complete format of the disk including checking it’s volume information and making sure it’s not got a secret partition (the Google can tell you how).
If you want to find its owner, find its owner.
Oh, thank you, that’s actually really handy to have lying around. I just wish I knew where it came from XD
And I checked before, it’s not got any hidden partitions on it. It even says on the outside that it’s 196mb. Weird capacity, which is why I noticed it in the first place. I wonder if it was originally some sort of promo thing that someone turned into a boot disc. How it ended up in my handbag is still a mystery though!
If it were mine, I’d just wipe it. You don’t know what it’s a boot disc FOR after all. Then either make it your own boot disc, or keep backups of your favourite fics downloaded onto it.
Last thing I need is more random backups of fic lying around. I’ve got my whole library on my phone, my tablet, my e-reader, and two separate external hard drives. Just a tad redundant. ><
I’ll wipe it when I get home, sure I can find some use for it eventually. 🙂
Watch it with that thing. Hackers have been known to stick malware on cheap small thumb drives and then leave them lying around so that unsuspecting individuals will take them home, plug them in and get themselves infected with something.
Then again, so have marketers.
On the other hand, it could be a bit of swag you picked up somewhere and then promptly forgot about while it slipped into the underbelly of your purse. Flash drives that small cost effectively nothing these days, so I’ve known companies that leave free goodies bowls of them sitting in the lobby like pens.
