*~DAREDEVIL CINEMATIC PARALLELS~*

(click images to see the specific films capped in the caption)

Netflix’s Daredevil has a lot of elements that reminded me of other stuff i like, and this is not me saying any of these parallels are necessarily INTENTIONAL btw, but here’s what I saw:

1- The show obviously owes a lot to Christopher Nolan’s Batman films for it’s general aesthetic as a gritty film noir telling of a superhero, yes i know batman is DC and daredevil is Marvel, but every marvel cinematic/tv universe property has it’s own general vibe and stuff like Fisk escaping police captivity reminded me a lot of similar scenes with the Joker in the dark knight… visually as well as tonally.
2- visually the show feels like a David Fincher film; all hidden in shadows with smooth camera movements and eerie lighting and it’s general visual composition and themes. Once again the film noir influence comes through in how characters look and interact and how the world is set up.  I haven’t even watched se7en yet but it still gives me similar vibes.
3&4- Tarantino’s P.O.V shots seem echoed a couple of times, as well as an explicit from the trunk of the car shot. Rosario Dawson it should be noted is also an actress from Tarantino’s Death Proof. I swear i’ve seen the P.O.V shot from the perspective of someone getting their face bludgeoned in somewhere else too but I can’t quite recall right now.
5- a one take, green tinged, one against many, fight down a hallway. Oldboy took a very horizontal perspective whereas Daredevil advanced away from the camera and had the action spilling in and out of frame via doorways, but the general momentum of action was the same.
6- another long single take but this time from inside a car rotating the camera’s perspective from the interior, the smooth movement of the camera inside the cramped car interior is not easy and leaves an impression which is why when I saw it in Daredevil I was instantly reminded of Children of Men’s entire action scene in a car.
7- The fire extinguisher dropped on someone running down the stairway is almost IDENTICAL SHOT FOR SHOT for the chainsaw scene in American Psycho???
8- not a film but Fisk repeatedly has shades of Hannibal Lecter in the detailed attention to meal preparation, it heavily mirrors similar scenes that frequent the Hannibal tv series… he even has goldberg variations playing which is from the films as well as the show

special thanks to deadwright for dealing with me yelling about this and screen capping all the daredevil stuff off her netflix.

Thank you kaleidoscopicmoomin for pointing me to this post!

About the omelette scene, I checked to make sure the cinematographer wasn’t the same as the one on Hannibal. No shared crew. I am still shocked about that, the show seems filmed very similarly to Hannibal at times.
