Okay, deadly seriously, no judgments from me at all.
Which of these do you like better? Which of these outfits do you think fits Emma’s character better?
To me, I’ll always love Quitely’s ludicrous design. Because in my mind, Emma’s in a comfy t-shirt and yoga pants while mentally projecting the impossible top and high wasted hot pants.
The second, not so much, because this is stuff in my own wardrobe (sans the cape), and Emma should be a bit more glamorous than a mid-western, woman in her late-30′s.
Yay! Same headcanon, here. I didn’t have it—hell, i didn’t even like her—until the panel of her sleeping face-down, scrunched-up, butt in the air like a golden retriever that exhausted herself and didn’t have the energy left to even get into a comfy position. I figure 99% of her appearance is mental projections and she’s just lounging around with bedhead and no makeup.
Honestly, the mind projections headcanon always feels a bit creepy to me, I mean no one else find it disturbing that she’s probably always reading everyone minds and manipulating their perception of reality ?
We already know that she reads and alters minds without consent. Emma is a Bad Person (but a good character). That aside, actual commentary on the costumes:
I prefer the second outfit because it projects power and authority, which is more suitable to where Emma’s character has been taken. The first oufit might have been suitable for other reasons… but also, to be honest, it just looks silly to me. I mean, almost all of what Quitely draws looks goofy and absurd, but especially this particular outfit.
There are a lot of lady superheroes out there who dress skimpily basically for the male readers, regardless of whether it’s something the character would actually do. Emma Frost is an exception to that.
Emma Frost has spent her life being fucked over and fucking other people over. She knows most of what there is to know about power, perception, sexuality and the rewards and perils of defying convention and expectation, and she knows how to play with them all to get what she wants. She dresses the way she does because people react to it. Some of them find her hot, and she can use that. Some of them get pissed off and disapproving, and that makes her lol. A rare few maybe just think, “Good on you, girl.” And then maybe she feels a bit of hope for humanity that day. And a bit of it is because she’s gorgeous and badass and she knows it, and after the life she’s had she’s allowed to flaunt herself and feel fantastic about it if she damn well wants to.
Maybe that first outfit is a psychic projection (it would explain how she manages to get it to stay on) or maybe she just used an entire roll of body tape. Which it is doesn’t matter. Does it make her less of a slut if she’s really wearing comfy pants and just lets people believe she’s dressing like a femmebot in an Austin Powers movie? She’s been a slut–in the real sense, with a mind-controlling pimp–and the idea of people perceiving her as sexually available holds no fear for her. She is sexually available–when she feels like it. When she doesn’t, it hardly matters because you’re never going to get close enough to touch her if she doesn’t want you to.
But she’s also totally the kind of person who would have no qualms about going around psychically projecting and mind-reading people without their consent. Only that’s a bit dangerous in her line of work, since every so often you run into somebody who’s immune to psychic projections and then they’d be standing in the corner pointing and giggling madly while everyone else either ogles her or recoils in fear.
In short, I find her as likely to wear one of these outfits as the
other, depending on the effect she’s trying to achieve at the time.
