Today I learned that Mauna Loa is so heavy that it has actually compressed the earth’s crust beneath it by about 5 miles.  This means that the true height of the volcano, which summits at 13,678 ft above sea level or 30,085 ft from seafloor to peak, is in fact roughly 56,000 feet from its earliest lava flows to its peak–over twice as high as Mt. Everest.
