003 | Give me a character & I will tell you

How I feel about this character:

Wash: Wash is amazing. …I’m not sure what I could add to this that isn’t already said. He’s gone through so much and played so many roles within the series, often as the foil, sometimes as the butt of the joke.
He’s the common sense while simultaneously being the heart of the (blue) team.
There’s something about this complementary aspect that makes him a very wholesome character. He’s incredibly difficult to pin down. You get the impression, from the VA’s tone, that sometimes he’s amused and trying not to let it show because of his position as leader.
You get the impression… That he can be whatever you want him to be, in terms of role, in terms of capability. He’s got this flexibility within the narrative structure, after all.
Yet, he’s not that. If there is a character that will fight, biting and clawing against what the narrative says it wants him to go, it’s Wash. From the EMP to Maine, from the Civil War to… Well, Locus and Felix.
And sometimes he doesn’t just fight. He talks, too. He’s not great at talking, but he’s trying. And it works. He’s got his limitations, but he’s growing as a character. He’s somebody you can look at and say, “He’s not perfect, but he’s trying his best.”, and realistically strive to be like.

Sharkface: Sharkface is an incredibly simple character at first. His existence was nothing more than a super-powered grunt for the Mercs.
…Then you look a bit into the past history of PFL, the past history of halo verse and UNSC, you look at what PFL was doing, and then you realise that Sharkface’s potential is underutilised, and that the moral ambiguity of Wash and Carolina’s past as Freelancers could have become… so much more.
Then you look at Sharkface’s history. You are given no reason to sympathise with him, or the fate of his camadarates.
But you’re intrigued. You recognise the writing on his back. It gives a sense of who he is, after all. You may share the same heritage…
But you start constructing a personality for Sharkface via inference and personality theory, because that’s what writers do when they write about things they care about, even side characters, and suddenly…
Bam.
Emotions.

All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Wash: Sharkface, Felix, Locus, Sarge… To name my favourites. I kinda had a bit of an impression that everybody in the BGC had a crush on Wash at some point, even Grif.
Sharkface: Wash, mostly. Wash isn’t as good a fighter as Carolina, but Wash has a way of sneaking underneath people’s shell. He and Carolina would have said the same thing (“You don’t have to do this!”), but Wash… would have understood something else intuitively.
If he had a chance to talk to Sharkface… Even as they fight…
I wonder. What would he have said?

My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Wash: Epsilon, Tucker, and Carolina. They’re kind of like family, but like brothers and sisters. Epsilon and Wash has got to talk about it someday, too. I’d like to see that.
Sharkface: Felix, if he wasn’t so jealous about Sharkface being considered a partner by Locus. They’d be Bad Friends Forever.
Think about it: What’s Sharkface’s moral justification for what he does? What’s Felix? They’re not similar, but it sure would be interesting to watch play out. It’s not exactly full of conflicts, but it’s… just got a certain dynamic.

My unpopular opinion about this character:
Wash: ……He is, without a doubt, what I consider a good person. There are some popular opinions about certain characters that I .. just feel is a bit of a reach. You can look at methods of inference and stuff like that to see whether or not something is off-base. But I don’t think it’s my place to make the argument for a fictional character.
Sharkface: There’s not much to form opinions about strongly enough that it could be considered unpopular, I think. I’m curious what others think about Shark, if they feel anything but apathy at all.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
Wash
: I wish he’d been able to talk more with Felix and Sharkface, or that it’d have been possible to delve deeper into his mind. In S12, we got more of Felix and Locus’ than we had Wash’s.
Sharkface: I wish they’d used better clip art for his tattoos.

My OTP:
Wash: Locington or Sargington (I’d pick Locington, but I like Sargington too)
Sharkface: Sharkington

My OT3:
Wash: Murder Sandwich
Sharkface: SharkWashLix
