the thing I love most about Kirk’s string of ex lovers across the galaxy is that every time he runs into one he’s like

“!!!!! How are you!! I missed you so much!! How’s your career?? Successful?? I’m so happy for you!! Haha, remember that time we almost got married!! But both of our careers were in the way?? That hasn’t changed but I’m still kinda in love with you and I’m happy you’re doing well!!! Goodbye forever again it’s a shame we never got married but I understand!!”

Bring back this kind of male hero please and thank you.

Every time Kirk struck a romance with a woman in the show, the writers were always careful to make it clear that he actually cared about her.  It wasn’t just “Hey, you’re hot.”  Admiration and respect were always part of it, and an earnest desire to do right by her.  He was more than once put in a position where he had to choose between the love interest and the Enterprise.  And while we know that inevitably ends, the fact that it was a question at all is significant.  They were women he was tempted to make a life with, not just bang and walk away from.

The fact that Kirk could love so many women across the galaxy is also significant–both because of the implication that the universe is vast and full of people who might be your match, and also because it shows Kirk had a way of looking at people that saw the qualities in them worth honoring and loving.
