Jack does eventually get infected.

The virus mutates people dramatically (as seen with the Gabriel reference sheet), and is solely dependent on the individual, as well as what happens to them as the virus runs through their system. If an individual got infected and spent a majority of their time near/in water, they would develop traits that would be advantageous to that lifestyle.

Monsters are separated into two categories: feral and sentient. Feral monsters did not take well to the transformation, and have completely lost all semblance of humanity, cognitive reasoning, and many higher brain functions. They’re little more than hyper-aggressive animals, driven by the virus to kill, consume, infect, and survive, and there is no reversing the effects, end of story.

Sentient monsters are people, and you can consider them almost 100% still ‘them’, though they develop some new instincts because of the virus. That’s a pretty important part of the story!

I actually have a whole google doc set up of notes, ideas, and conversation/scenes, descriptions, etc I threw around with a bunch of friends who helped me put these ideas together. It’s only 50 pages of notes so far.

I’m not very confident in my own writing skills; I’ve written like one ficlet I haven’t put up anywhere and that’s about it. I’d love to illustrate scenes, maybe a comic here or there. Maybe I’ll try to write it in small chunks at a time; for what all is in the doc, doing a full fic seems really daunting.

For now, I suppose this is just getting information out there, seeing who’s interested, and having fun with it!

Shoutouts to @soursinbin, @prettyarbitrary, and @infinite-atmosphere for being such patient people, and helping me develop this AU.
