The Bechdel Test has long been the barometer of women-friendly films, but Pacific Rim fans say it doesn’t give the movie’s female lead enough credit.(ugh tumblr would you stop eating my comments when I reblog stuff pleeeaase?)
I like this a lot. While I do wish there’d been more well-developed women in the movie (I mean, c’maaaan, where’s our scene with Sasha “mentoring” Mako about keeping calm in the Drift and sort of accidentally terrorising her instead? I think I might have to write this), but it’s unfair to use a flawed test to completely disregard the progress this movie has made for female action-movie protagonists.
I mean, hell, Twilight (the books, not the movies) pass the Bechdel test. I’m not sure we should be using it as a litmus for feminist content.
Yeah, the Bechdel test isn’t so much functional as a litmus test as it is, like the article says, minimally indicative. I like the idea of the Mako Mori test, though. ^_^ They’re both excellent measurements of “Can you at least manage THIS much?”
