you have single handedly come up with the perfect response to this gifset there will never be anything better than that gif or anything that describes my feelings more accurately

The way John basically worships Sherlock is a thing I will never get over. Even the stupid stuff Sherlock does that drives John up the wall elicits a kind of starry-eyed, adoring, “He’s an infuriating batshit moron, but he is MY infuriating batshit moron” response.  He wants the whole world to know how unbearably amazing Sherlock is.  It hurts him to think people misunderstand the man.  He starts out in the realm of the platonic crush, muttering compliments under his breath and excited that this brilliant weirdo is even talking to him, and by the end of the night it’s shooting strangers and blogging Sherlock’s praises to the internet.

It’s all well-documented, of course, but sometimes I just have to stop and devote a bit of time to pondering how UTTERLY FLOORED with happiness John seems to be every day to be Sherlock’s friend, and how contentedly devoted he is to making Sherlock’s life happier and showing the whole world how awesome he is.  I can’t tell if he even entirely notices how thoroughly his life revolves around Sherlock, but if he does, he certainly doesn’t mind it.  (I mean I don’t think Sherlock is the ONLY thing in his life.  John’s got other friends he spends time with.  He goes to medical conferences.  He dates.  It’s just that Sherlock has no contenders for being the priority in John’s life, for whom he’ll drop pretty much everything and come running at a moment’s notice.)

And of course Sherlock spends some effort just trying to keep the hearts and rainbows from showing in his eyes because “YAY JOHN. <3”  Which is possibly the most interesting mystery in the show, because while Sherlock’s array of gifts and goggle-worthy attributes is vast and obvious, it’s hard to imagine what John has that would make a man like Sherlock decide that he is the one human being on the planet who is worthy of keeping.

It’s not John’s own helping of batshittery.  That helps, I think, but we’ve seen that Sherlock knows plenty of danger-addicted crackpots and, while that may win a measure of his respect, it’s not enough to make him adore them.  Maybe it’s the single-minded devotion and unshakable loyalty.  Admittedly that’s enough to win most people over.  It’s hard not to get a bit mushy over somebody who’s convinced you’re God’s gift to them.
