… from July 28 to August 4, 2013, in Los Angeles!

“The Lambda Literary Foundation is proud to announce details for the 2013 Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices, the nation’s premier queer writers residency.  The Retreat will be held July 28 – August 4, 2013 on the campus of the American Jewish University (AJU) in Los Angeles.

“Faculty include Samuel R. Delany teaching the Fiction workshop, Sarah Schulman teaching the Nonfiction workshop, David Groff teaching the Poetry workshop, and Malinda Lo teaching both Genre Fiction and Young Adult Fiction.”

I’m so excited! Click here to find out more about the Genre & YA workshop and how you can apply.

Sharing this because I know a number of people who’re interested in getting published, and this sounds amazing.  I’m also pretty sure I’ve got a few peeps who live around LA.  Unfortunately, things like this require that you have time and money, or else that you’re lucky in your location, but if you can manage it, based on those names this is going to be fantastic.

Workshops like this such a great opportunity for writers who are looking to get published, because not only are you getting instruction from old hands in the business, you’re also making contacts.  Take the opportunity to interact with the instructors, if you ever go to one of these.  Ask questions about things you’re curious about, push further into topics they mention that you want to know about.  These folks can tell you not only about writing, but also about getting published, which is another skill set entirely—and they can not only give you advice for navigating the publishing waters, but, if they think you’ve got what it takes, they may be willing to vouch for you. (But like any recommendation or reference, clear it with them first.)
